Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement in NC

Which Type of Medicare Coverage Is Right for You?

Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement (Medigap) are two very different ways to get your Medicare coverage. We explain the differences in plain English — no jargon — so you can understand how each one works before you decide.

Understanding the Difference

Medicare Advantage

Also called Medicare Part C

  • ✓Bundles your Medicare Parts A, B, and usually Part D into one plan
  • ✓Often has lower monthly premiums
  • ✓Uses a network of doctors and hospitals (HMO or PPO)
  • ✓May include extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing
  • ✓Copays and out-of-pocket costs apply when you use care

Medicare Supplement

Also called Medigap

  • ✓Works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A & B)
  • ✓Helps cover costs Original Medicare doesn't pay — like deductibles and copays
  • ✓Generally accepted by any doctor who takes Medicare
  • ✓Higher monthly premiums, but more predictable out-of-pocket costs
  • ✓Does not include drug coverage — you'll need a separate Part D plan
